Los Angeles, CA – December 30, 2023
Location: Marcus Garvey School
Time: 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Renowned sculptor NiJel Binns is set to reveal a symbolic masterpiece: the Marcus Garvey Bronze, honoring the iconic Pan-Africanist leader, Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The unveiling, titled the “Soft Unveiling,” marks a historic moment in the quest to honor Garvey’s legacy and correct a symbolic tragedy that persisted throughout his lifetime.
Despite Marcus Garvey’s profound dedication to Africa and Africans worldwide, he tragically never had the opportunity to set foot on African soil. In a move to symbolically rectify this, Dr. Julius Garvey, the only surviving son of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, has spearheaded the Marcus Garvey Bronze Coordinating Committee. This dedicated team, comprised of change agents from across the United States, aims to install a statue of Marcus Garvey at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, following this initial unveiling.
This event represents a milestone in the long-standing efforts spanning over three years. These efforts have involved diverse initiatives, including art auctions, fundraising activities, articles, petitions, and collaborations with esteemed institutions like the African Union and Addis Ababa University.
African Union has been gifted two statues before – President Kwame Nkrumah from the West and Emperor Haile Selassie from the East. However, Marcus Garvey’s stature as the premier Pan-Africanist leader from the African Diaspora positions this unveiling as a cornerstone moment for the newly established Sixth Region.
NiJel Binns, the visionary sculptor behind this monumental tribute, invites all to join this historic occasion. Attendees will witness the unveiling of this prestigious artifact, with an opportunity presented to have their names etched into history alongside this symbolic gesture.
“This unveiling not only honors Marcus Garvey but signifies a pivotal moment in our quest for Pan-African unity,” stated Marcus Sarkey, an advocate supporting this initiative.
