Authenticity Recap

The round table discussion on Authenticity held on 18 May 2024 and led by AWiB’s 2024 Board member & Freelance Consultant, Aster Asfaw, was one of connection and sharing. The session commenced with participants introducing themselves and sharing their authentic selves.

After gathering everyone’s expectations for the session, Aster began by defining authenticity as being true, accurate, real, and genuine.

Living a life aligned with our values and goals is a significant step towards authenticity. When we are authentic, we are honest with ourselves and others.

Why is authenticity important?

  • Building trust and respect
  • Demonstrating integrity
  • Effectively dealing with problems
  • Reducing stress in our lives
  • Realizing our potential, fostering confidence, and enhancing self-esteem
  • Authenticity and vulnerability come with risks, and it’s important to be prepared and know how to minimize them.
  • Self-awareness, mindfulness, and self-acceptance are fundamental prerequisites for embracing authenticity.
  • Maintaining a daily journal practice can contribute to self-awareness.
  • Fear of judgment, rejection, loss of control, and self-protection are common barriers to authenticity.
  • Forgiveness, honoring and accepting our feelings, taking risks, and practicing self-compassion are key steps in our journey towards authenticity.
  • It is advisable to assess the timing, environment, and circumstances when choosing to express our authentic selves.
