The Ethiopian Medical Women’s Association (EMWA)

The Ethiopian Medical Women Association is a registered professional association with a member of around 2000 female physicians working all around the country. The association is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented women in medicine and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians who address the needs of underserved communities particularly that of women and young girls. The Ethiopian Medical Women’s Association puts a great emphasis on empowering women in medicine, and women in general by setting a specific theme that focuses on Gender-Based Violence. The association was founded by the prominent Dr. Senait.

The association aims to achieve greater representation of women in medicine at advanced career paths professionally and enhance their contribution to improving women’s and communities’ health. They envision a culture in which Ethiopian women in medicine enjoy equal rights and participation in reimagined power and decision-making structures, advance professionally and women that have been liberated from all forms of oppression. The association envisions to see a society in which medical women’s contribution to all aspects of life and health is recognized, rewarded and celebrated – in leadership, in care and in production professional productivity. EMWA members were those leading a social movement over social media that worked to uncover incidences of sexual harassment against women doctors in Ethiopia in the wake of the #metoo movement.

The association is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented women in medicine, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians who address the needs of underserved communities particularly that of women and young girls. The members work with the value to act with integrity, honesty and openness; Maintain relationships of mutual trust and respect; Treat others – and each other – fairly and equitably and to remain unified through belief in quality care, collective engagement and professionalism.
