We congratulate Hikmet Abdella who is appointed as Director of the Accounting and Auditing Board of Ethiopia (AABE).

Hikmet left her position as a general manager of Attco, a family-owned business, involved in infrastructure development in Ethiopia and other African countries in many sectors by representing manufacturers.

Hikmet is widely known for her work with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and served as country director from 2004 to 2012 with the regional responsibility toward contributing to ACCA strategy in Eastern African countries with specific operational responsibility for Ethiopia and Sudan.

Hikmet is also a member of the Female CEO Breakfast Club (FCBC), organized under AWiB, to serve the needs of high-level female executives of Ethiopia with soaring expectations and pressure and to create connections with women of the same desire.

AABE is a statutory body established in terms of the Financial Reporting Proclamation 847/2014, and Regulation 332/2015 with the primary purpose of protecting the public interest.

To achieve this, AABE is responsible for regulating the profession as well as for issuing a national professional accountancy qualification that is recognized internationally. Other responsibilities include setting accounting and auditing standards and code of conduct to regulate the behavior of professionals; register and certify professionals and firms to provide such services; review and monitor the work of professionals and firms rendering accountancy and/or audit services and reporting entities; supporting education and continuous professional development programs; enforcing the financial reporting law and taking disciplinary measures on those who do not comply with the provisions of the law and the regulation set by the Government and directives and other relevant policies and guidelines issued by the Board.

The Board has also the objective of promoting high-quality reporting of financial and related information by reporting entities, protecting the professional independence of accountants, auditors and supporting and promoting the establishment of strong Professional Accountancy Organizations in Ethiopia and advise the government on any matters relating to financial reporting, auditing, and corporate governance.
