EWiEn: Influential Women in Energy Award Event Ethiopia 2023

The third Women in Energy Ethiopia awarding event took place on November 23, 2023, at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, in collaboration with Ethiopian-German energy cooperation and Energizing Development (Endev). The event celebrated the achievements of three remarkable women who have made outstanding contributions to the field of energy in Ethiopia. More than 130 guests attended the ceremony and witnessed the award of EWiEn’s Influential Women in Energy for 2023 to the three deserving recipients.

The event was attended by guests from various sectors who came to honor the achievements of the women. Representatives from government and non-government organizations, private organizations, embassies, media, associations, academic institutions, and EWiEn members were among the attendees. The ceremony also featured speeches and award presentations by distinguished guests, such as H.E. W/ro Alemitu Umut, the State Minister for Women and Children Affairs of Ministry of Women and Social Affairs; Mr. Kaleb Tadesse, the Energy Resource and Study Department CEO of Ministry of Water and Energy; Mr. Samson Tolessa, the Head of Secretariat of Ethiopian German Energy of GIZ; and Mr. Al Mudabbir Bin Anam, the Programme Manager (DV) Energizing Development (EnDev) Ethiopia of GIZ

The event aimed to celebrate and inspire influential women in the energy sector by awarding three outstanding women who have made significant contributions to the field. The event also offered a unique opportunity for the awardees to showcase their achievements, and advance their careers. Furthermore, the event served as a platform for women entrepreneurs, partners, and other organizations to display their businesses, projects, and initiatives,  and for women energy professionals to network and empower each other.

  • Mizan Welderufael

Mizan Welderufael

Mizan Welderufael Massa is a Productive Use of Energy (PUE) Manager at Energicity, a company that provides reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to rural communities in Sierra Leone, Benin, and Liberia. She has over 15 years of experience in the energy sector, working in various roles such as distribution electrical engineer, system operation engineer, energy portfolio and logistics manager, automated meter reading project lead, enterprise resource planning PMO, local energy expert, senior energy consultant, and Ethiopia energy lead.

Bezawit Mekonnen Getahun

Bezawit Mekonnen Getahun is a Project Manager at Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), where she oversees the ADELE on grid- ten towns project, funded by the World Bank. She has an MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) in Japan, She has over 13 years of experience in the electric power sector, working as an electrical engineer, design team leader, engineering team leader, research assistant, and senior electrical engineer. She has expertise in distribution design, system operation, Project management, enterprise resource planning, and renewable energy.

Blen Genene

Blen Genene is a CO-founder and Chief Operations Officer(COO) of APCO Enterprises Limited, a company that provides innovative solutions for the construction, energy, and manufacturing sectors. With a background in mechanical engineering and MBA in Project Management, her career expands to cover many African countries like South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Kenya, and Ethiopia. With excellent leadership skills and managing several large-scale renewable energy projects that benefit countries in their journey to clean energy/carbon zero-emission transition. On a mission to save the planet by strategically leading their company in the role of sustainable environment.
