Aster Mamo

Aster Mamo, executive committee member of the Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO), one of the four member parties of the ruling party Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front, has been appointed by Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, to be the next Civil Service Minister and Good Governance and Reform Cluster Coordinator with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister.
Aster is the first woman to be appointed to serve with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister. Prior to her appointment she was serving as advisor to the Prime Minister and Chief Government Whip.
Apart from her latest appointment, Aster was recently elected to be the deputy chairwoman of OPDO. Aster replaces Muktar Kedir, who was recently elected to be the chairman of OPDO and president of Oromia Regional State after the passing of Alemayehu Atomsa.
Aster served as Minister of the Ministry of Youth and Sport, Minister of Chief Government Whip Airports Enterprises Board Chairperson; Privatization & Public Enterprises Supervising Agency Vice Chairperson, HIV/AIDS prevention and Control Office Vice Chairman; Fre-Addis Ethiopia Women’s Education Fund Vice Chairman, Tumsa Endowment Vice Chairman National Coalition for Women Against HIV/AIDS Board Member, Metals and Engineering Corporation Member, ETC Member Jimma University Education.
Aster is married to Mr. Merga Feyissa. She has MA in Organizational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University.
According to the UNECA’s African Women’s Rights Observatory, women represent 27.8 percent of House of People’s Representatives (152 parliamentarians) and 16.3% of the House of Federation (22 women) in Ethiopia.
