AWIB Women of Excellence Gala Award, Ethiopian Style

An AWiB member shares her experience of the Women of Excellence Gala Awards in this post.

Transformed by the elegance of the caliber of women present, the Sheraton was suddenly elevated to echo the who’s who of the most powerful women in Ethiopia.

The first of its kind, the Women of Excellence (WOE) Award gala is the inception of Association of Women In Business founded in 2010, an association that focuses on recognizing women of Ethiopia, seeing them for who they are, equipping them with the tools one need to lead their life, as well as create a platform to network. The WOE gala is in recognition of the inspiring women in Ethiopia doing uplifting work in the continent and more.

Walking through the crowed of women dressed in the unique contemporary Ethiopian traditional attire, they were all elegant in style, perfected in curves & supernatural in their achievements. Transfixed by the positive energy in the room, I froze for an hour to take in the inner & outer beauty of the Ethiopian women of all ages & all walks of life, noticing the accomplishments in the room of more than 400 influential women in Ethiopia, mesmerized by their charm & wit, satisfied by my present moment, I felt balanced.

Within a couple of hours of attending the gala & meeting fellow members, I learnt about an Indian/Kenyan Woman that survived cancer & was teaching the joys of balancing one\’s life; discussed possible partnership with an American fellow Banker from an equity financing company in training women in African to be more financeable; negotiated a three course vegan meal even though it wasn’t in the menu with a Sheraton waitress; learnt the journeys of successful & motivating women that have achieved so much for Ethiopia & the society; got a hug from one of the founders of AWIB – Nahu. What more can a humble Ethiopia woman ask for in taking on the torch to do better, and be better, so as I can pass the torch even further.

Thank you AWIB board especially my dear friend Nadiaye, its members, and Sheraton staff for being part of paying it forward…
