Photography 101 Recap

On Saturday, September 13, AWiB members gathered for a Photograph session , discovering that taking a picture is more than pressing a button- it is about how we see the world around us. Members learned to move beyond simply taking pictures and began to understand the principles of professional photography. Members learned the rule of thirds, framing, balance, lines, simplicity, and avoiding mergers. and also learned slowing down, pre-visualizing a shot, pausing to look through the viewfinder. Through interactive activities, participants observed different photos, assigned them to these rules, and then practiced taking one subject from multiple directions to see how perspective changes a story.

This session reminded everyone that the magic of photography lies not in expensive equipment, but in observation, creativity, and the willingness to look more closely.

  • Photography can be used as a powerful tool for self-expression, storytelling, and promoting personal or business identities.
  • Photography is about perception—capturing how we see light, shadow, and emotion.
  • Pre-visualizing, slowing down, and pausing before taking a shot leads to stronger storytelling.
  • The rules of photography (thirds, framing, balance, lines, simplicity, and mergers) create structure and clarity in images.
