The Impact of Culture on Self-Esteem
Self-esteem is our subjective evaluation of our worth and how we see ourselves. Positive self-esteem enables us to navigate the ups and downs of life with our chin up and forward-looking eyes. It allows us to have a balanced opinion of our capabilities and limitations. A negative or low self-esteem makes us devalue our abilities and limits our contributions, stagnating our potential. It is noted that several factors influence our self-esteem as it evolves from childhood. Most often, our self-esteem evolves based on our experiences. One such factor that impacts self-esteem greatly is culture. Culture, itself an evolving construct, greatly shapes various aspects of the self, how we view ourselves, and what we strive for and aim to accomplish.
