AWiB Presents HER Gems

Every July AWiB showcases HER members through their stories.These are women who gravitated to the tribe and transformed themselves even more. These are like-minded individuals who have unique stories.  Let us learn from each other!

We present wonderful AWiBers—inspirations in human form.

Hinjat Shamil is currently the Senior Reform Advisor at the Ministry of Finance, where she plays a key role in spearheading several macro-fiscal reforms related to state-owned enterprises, pension funds, financial sectors, and debt management. She also oversees and the supports the preparation and implementation of the government’s consecutive Home-Grown Economic Reform packages.

Hinjat has previously worked with the United Nations and the GOE in the areas of  development finance, industrialization, and the sustainable development goals.Hinjat holds a Master of Public Policy in International Development from Johns Hopkins University and a degree in Economics from Addis Ababa University, which have equipped her with a strong foundation in economics and policy analysis. She also has international work experience the US, Afghanistan and Ethiopia.

Sara Yirga Woldegerima  is the founder and general manager of YA Coffee Roasters. She has worked in the food and beverages as well as agro-processing and manufacturing industries for over 10 years. Sara also has ten years of experience in project management and administration positions in the UN, Local and International NGOs. She has specialized in IT and communications. In addition, Sara is skilled in management, sales, project management, and public speaking.

Sara loves people, loves giving and loves learning (formally and informally). She is quick to generate new ideas especially business related. She loves brainstorming with people of same or dissimilar interests; she respect others opinions and believes in and appreciate constructive feedback. She says she is a work in progress spiritually and in many other aspects of life.

Aster Asfaw is a certified Executive Leadership Coach and a freelance trainer, coach, and mentor specializing in leadership, life skills, personal development, and child care. With a career spanning over three decades, she has worked in various national and international positions within NGOs. Most recently, she was SOS Children’s Villages International Representative, supporting and overseeing operations in over ten African countries. Prior to that, she served as the Country Director for SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia for approximately six years.

Aster Asfaw is driven by an unwavering commitment to positively impacting the lives of the individuals she works with and for. Her background encompasses leadership, social work, and accounting, providing her with broad knowledge and experience in holistic child & community development, child rights & protection, financial management, leadership, and governance.

Her life purpose revolves around serving others through sharing and caring, while her ultimate goal is to enable, empower, and inspire people to unlock their inner potential and thrive in all aspects of life. She seizes every opportunity to continuously learn, unlearn, and relearn, staying dedicated to personal and professional growth.


Samrawit Meressa is a young and energetic leader. She has diverse experiences working as a Production Managing Director on the “Titilo” show broadcasted on DSTV and as Assistant Manager at Zoskales Diamond – a family business. Influenced by her father at an early age she is very passionate about jewelry design and strives to make her dream of designing a reality.  Samrawit has gone to great lengths on the path to self-discovery.
