The Poet in You Recap

On September 6, AWiB members gathered for The Poet in You, a workshop to awaken their inner poet. The session opened with reflections on what poetry truly is: not necessarily rhyme or complexity, but an honest expression of life as we experience it each day.

Together, members explored different techniques of writing poetry and discovered that poems do not need to be long or elaborate to be meaningful. Instead, poetry often begins in simple moments with our daily lives, unspoken fears, and quiet reflections. Participants were encouraged to see poetry as a practice of courage and authenticity rather than perfection.

A highlight of the session was the chance to write poetry on the spot. Members crafted and shared their verses, while others read poems they had written previously. This sharing created an atmosphere of vulnerability, connection, and inspiration reminding everyone that poetry is a bridge between thought, day-to-day life, and collective experience.

The discussion also highlighted that the first step in writing is simply to start, without the pressure of getting it right. Overtime, practice and consistency help refine one’s poetic voice. Reading widely was emphasized as a keyway to expand perspective and deepen reflection, making one’s own writing more authentic and resonant.

Key takeaways:

  • Poetry reflects who we are and how we live; it does not need to be complicated.
  • A poem can begin with the smallest details we often hesitate to express.
  • Writing is not about perfection and growth comes through time and practice.
  • Reading more enriches our ability to write and reflect poetically.
  • Sharing poems, whether new or old, strengthens connection and confidence.
