Communicating to Influence Recap

This week’s AWiB session explored Communicating to Influence — a skill at the heart of effective leadership. The speaker opened with a quote from her Harvard professor: “It doesn’t matter how smart you are; what matters is how well you influence.” It was a powerful reminder that communication isn’t about what we know but how we connect, engage, and move others.

She emphasized that there’s no right or wrong way to communicate — growth begins when we step out of our comfort zones. Through a quick self-rating exercise, participants reflected on how they present themselves — not just in words, but through tone and presence.

Body language took center stage next. Before we even speak, our posture, eye contact, and expressions shape how we’re perceived. The speaker urged us to “read the room,” understand our audience, and communicate with intention.

True influence, she said, starts with empathy. Great communicators listen deeply and make others feel seen and valued. Sharing a bit of who we are — our stories, our authenticity — helps build trust and connection.

She broke influence into three layers: Logic, Emotion, and Connection.

Logic: Be clear, prepared, and intentional with your words. Unclear messages close doors.

Emotion: Understand your audience’s needs and motivations. People are moved when they feel heard and appreciated.

Connection: Listen for both words and emotions. Respect, follow-through, and integrity sustain influence.

In closing, she invited everyone to reflect on how to apply these insights in daily life,  at work, school, or home.
