Assertive Recap

On September 6th, AWiB members gathered for a roundtable discussion on Assertive Communication, facilitated by Bethelhem Hailu, Project Manager at AWiB. The session created a reflective space for members to explore how they respond during conflict, whether they tend to hold back, push too hard, or find a balance through speaking up assertively.
Participants navigate the common struggles that come with expressing oneself, such as fear of conflict or rejection, feelings of guilt, or leaning toward aggression when emotions rise. They reflected on how communication is more than just exchanging words; it is one of the most essential skills that shapes how we express our needs, handle challenges, and build meaningful relationships.
Key takeaways:
- Communication impacts relationships, builds or breaks confidence, and determines whether conflicts are reduced or fueled.
- Assertive communication allows us to express our needs with clarity while respecting others.
- Developing assertive communication strengthens both personal and professional relationships by creating healthier, more constructive interactions.
- Practicing assertiveness involves shifting our mindset and choosing language that reflects confidence and respect.
- Clear, consistent, and empathetic communication supports decision-making, boosts morale, and strengthens teamwork. It’s not just what leaders say, it’s how they say it that drives results.
