Volunteering with Purpose: The AWiB Experience

Each year, AWiB attracts passionate young leaders, often students in their second year of university and upwards, who bring fresh perspectives, energy, and commitment to our mission of elevating women in empowering themselves. Volunteering at AWiB is an exceptional opportunity to be part of a transformative community. Our volunteers gain insights into personal and professional growth during our weekly Lighthouse sessions, expand their network during our monthly AWiB Connects @ the Hilton, and develop practical skills while working with each department. This unique learning opportunity enhances their employability and ignites their path to leadership.

Here are our new group of volunteers starting in September 2025:

Abigail Yonas

A third-year Management student at Addis Ababa University, Abigail is beginning her professional journey. With no prior work or volunteering experience, she sees AWiB as the perfect place to start. Drawn to AWiB’s mission of empowering women, Abigail wants to help create spaces where women can lead, thrive, and inspire others. She hopes to learn from the community of strong, driven individuals while contributing to a cause she deeply admires.

Rediet Gebru

With a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology, Rediet is passionate about AWiB’s vision of creating spaces for women to grow, lead, and support each other. For her, volunteering is both about giving back and being part of an energy that nurtures growth. She sees AWiB as a space where she can contribute meaningfully while evolving personally and professionally.

Deborah Desta

Currently a Junior Researcher and Data Manager at Insights Consults, Deborah holds a B.A. in Economics and has volunteered at Hana Orphanage Homes. Her career and volunteer background reflect her commitment to development and community engagement. She joins AWiB because she believes in cultivating women’s leadership and views the platform as a way to grow, contribute, and connect with a community that inspires women to reach their full potential.

Blen Gebrehiwot

Blen is a senior Management student who also runs her own small business, a venture she has managed for four years. Her entrepreneurial spirit drives her excitement to volunteer at AWiB. She believes in the power of women uniting for change and is eager to contribute through event coordination, communications, or outreach. Blen hopes to refine her skills, expand her network, and play a role in advancing AWiB’s vision.

TedbabeMariam Mammo

With a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s in Project Management underway, Tedbabe brings strong technical and managerial skills. She has also pursued certifications in Business Leadership and Virtual Assistance. Inspired by AWiB’s mission after hearing about it from a friend, she sees volunteering as a way to connect with mentors, contribute her skills, and grow within a supportive community aligned with her values.

Elshadai Fekadu

A second-year Management student at St. Mary’s University, Elshadai already has volunteering experience with Great Run. She is drawn to AWiB’s role in building strong women leaders and hopes to learn new skills, meet inspiring people, and contribute to meaningful community impact. For her, AWiB is both a learning opportunity and a chance to give back

These stories show that AWiB volunteers are diverse in background yet united in purpose. Whether students, entrepreneurs, or young professionals, they are all driven by a desire to contribute to women’s self empowerment and to grow personally along the way.

Together, AWiB and its volunteers embody the spirit of shared growth: nurturing women’s voices, advancing the AWiB movement, and creating seeds of change that shape tomorrow.
