Honoring the Past, Building the Future: Tafari Makonnen Polytechnic College

On April 22, 2025, alumni and guests gathered to celebrate the centennial of Tafari Makonnen Polytechnic College (TMPTC) and the reinstatement of its renowned name. Initially known as Tafari Mekonnen School (TMS), the institution was established and funded by Crown Prince Ras Tafari Mekonnen in 1925, before being crowned Emperor Haile Selassie I in 1930.

Previously renamed as Entoto Technical and Vocational Education and Training College, the institution had continued steady expansion since its establishment, having over 4,000 students and more than 150 instructors. 

The 100th anniversary was marked by a celebration and fundraising ceremony highlighting TMPTC as the cornerstone of Ethiopia’s educational heritage. The institution has significantly contributed towards shaping the nation’s academic landscape.​

Distinguished alumni were honored for their contributions in fields such as medicine, engineering, literature, public service, and entrepreneurship. Cultural performances celebrated Ethiopia’s ethnic diversity.​

Alumni and supporters of the institution have put forward Initiatives such as the establishment of a Digital Learning Hub, an Alumni Mentorship Program, infrastructure expansions with modern science and engineering workshops, and the launch of the “TMS 200 Fund” to support scholarships and facility upgrades. These are aimed to propel the institution into its next century of educational excellence.
