A Tribute to Professor Elisabeth Wolde Giorgis

AWiB mourns the passing of Professor Elisabeth Wolde Giorgis on March 16, 2025, a pioneering scholar, curator, and champion of Ethiopian art and history. Her immense contributions to Ethiopian modernism and her dedication to uncovering the intersections of art, history, and identity have left an indelible mark on Ethiopia and beyond.

Professor Elisabeth had the rare ability to translate complex artistic theories into engaging discussions that resonated with the public. She is remembered as one of the talented voices on Sheger FM. She was also a tireless advocate for Ethiopian women in history, shedding light on their overlooked contributions in visual and literary arts. Her work challenged traditional narratives and ensured women’s rightful place in Ethiopia’s artistic and historical discourse.

She was known for her exceptional dedication, intellectual curiosity, open communication, humor and ability to entertain differing viewpoints. Her friends described her as one who would gather them warmly to entertain a multitude of both fun and intellectual topics. Her book Modernist Art in Ethiopia (2019, Ohio University Press) won the 2020 Bethwell A. Ogbot Book Prize for East African Studies. She was also an inspiration and mentor to many young scholars and a strong supporter of her students’ volunteer work.

At the time of her passing, Professor Elisabeth was Chair of the Department of Humanities and Professor of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at The Africa Institute in Sharjah, underscoring her global intellectual influence. She previously held leadership roles at Addis Ababa University, where she directed the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, served as Dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts, and led the Modern Art Museum: Gebre Kristos Desta Center.

As we bid farewell, AWiB honors Professor Elisabeth’s extraordinary legacy. Her work will continue to inspire generations, and her impact on Ethiopian art and history will endure. Rest in peace, Professor Elisabeth Wolde Giorgis.
