The Impact of Culture on Self Esteem
Self-esteem is our subjective evaluation of our individual worth and how we see ourselves. A positive self-esteem enables us to navigate the ups and downs of life with our chins up and eyes forward-looking. It allows us to have a balanced opinion of our capabilities and limitations. A negative or low self-esteem makes us devalue our abilities and limits our contributions, stagnating our potential.
It is noted that there are a number of factors that influence our self-esteem as it evolves from childhood. Most often, our self-esteem evolves based on our experiences. One of such factors that impact self-esteem greatly is culture. Culture, itself an evolving construct, greatly shapes various aspects of the self, how we view ourselves and what we strive for and aim to accomplish.
