Behind every successful man is a strong woman, so the saying goes. In AWiB, we believe this also applies for women and our saying goes- behind every successful woman is a strong man. This November, we invite AWiBers to invite the men who have supported you, and men please invite the women who have done the same. On our monthly event, we focus on men who support women through their success, our “Men behind She-roes”.

What do we mean by “Men behind she-roes”?

“Men behind she-roes” refers to the active involvement of men in promoting and advocating for women’s achievements and leadership. It embodies the idea that men can play a crucial role in elevating women by championing their successes, supporting their career advancement, and actively working toward gender equity. This support involves men recognizing and challenging biases, providing mentorship, and fostering environments where women can excel.

In this context, “she-roes” symbolizes women who excel and lead with distinction, often breaking barriers and defying stereotypes. By supporting these women, men contribute to a more equitable society where gender-based limitations are diminished, and both men and women can benefit from a diverse and inclusive leadership landscape.

Mainly, “men supporting she-roes” is about building alliances across genders to create opportunities, advocate for fairness, and celebrate women’s contributions. It emphasizes that gender equity is a collective effort, and men have an essential role in shaping a culture that values and supports women’s achievements and leadership.

  • What are the prevailing perceptions of gender roles and gender equity in our society?
  • What is men’s role in supporting women in leadership as well as to take leadership positions?
  • Do men have a role in advocating for gender equity? What actions can we take in our day-to-day life to promote gender equity?
  • What are the Ethiopian men’s experiences?
