From Chaos to Coherence: Leadership that Listens

“Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.” – Deepak Chopra
From Chaos to Coherence: Leadership that Listens
This October, AWiB presents “From Chaos to Coherence: Leadership that Listens.” As we reflect on this timely and urgent theme, we must recognize a hard truth – leading from a reactive state feeds chaos. It traps us in a loop of putting out fires, only to watch new ones spark from the embers. This cycle reflects a control-oriented leadership style – tense, unsustainable, and far from proactive. So how do we shift from reactive to intentional leadership? From constant noise to meaningful coherence?
We live in a country rich with history and hope, yet today is clouded by unrest and division. The political and social instability we witness is not separated from us; it mirrors the chaos within our own hearts and homes. We are citizens holding both grief and greatness, both fatigue and fierce resilience. The unrest in our country is not unlike the emotional turbulence many of us carry silently.
We live in a world pulled toward extremes. Speaking out comes with risk, silence, and shame. Caught between fear and fire, many of us lose our way. Yet it is in this space, this edge of chaos, that a new kind of leadership must emerge – one that listens.
Listening is not submission. It is strength. It is the first act of coherence, the kind of coherence that HeartMath’s IQM model describes as the alignment of mind, heart, and action. Through self-regulation, clear communication, and strategic renewal, leaders rise through chaos to coherence.
Coherent communication is deliberate. It cuts through the noise, fear, opinion, ego and invites clarity, connection, and collaboration. When leaders pause to listen… really listen, they rebuild trust in fractured teams, uncertain communities, and exhausted souls.
Today, our country and inner world cry out not for more control, but for deeper listening. From chaos to coherence, the path forward begins in silence, in presence, and in the courage to listen to ourselves and one another with the intent to understand.
Talking Points
- What does it mean to listen as a leader?
- How do the unspoken struggles affect us as individuals & as a collective?
- What methods can leaders of mega organizations, communities and the country use to listen to those they serve?
- How can leaders who truly listen make the most of today’s easily manipulated social media to grow their impact and lead by example?
- Is there a historical example where Ethiopian leaders listened to the people and created a shift in their approach or decisions?
