Self-Confidence Recap

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, AWiBers joined a transformative workshop titled Self-Confidence. The session guided members on a profound journey inward to explore the foundations of authentic self-assurance. Facilitated by Nahu S. Girma, Founder & Director of AWiB, the session moved beyond simple definitions to create an experiential understanding of the masks we wear and the glorious selves we conceal captured in the theme: “Tear off the mask; your face is glorious.”

The session began with a powerful self-assessment, where members reflected on three core questions: their purpose in life, what identifies them, and what they would ask God. This shifted into an introspective exercise on assertiveness, allowing each person to grade their own behavioral patterns and identify clear starting points for growth.

A foundational exploration of personal values followed, using guided reflection to help members identify their core principles. Participants examined how these values act as an internal compass for making decisions and living authentically.

The workshop then incorporated powerful symbolic activities. Using physical face masks, participants viscerally felt the constriction and suffocation of pretending to be someone they are not. This immediate, sensory experience deepened the commitment to authenticity.

The exploration deepened with a crucial distinction between self-esteem and self-efficacy. We discussed how self-efficacy, the belief in our ability to execute specific tasks, can be learnt and strengthened through skills, knowledge, and experiences like reading books. In contrast, core self-esteem, our fundamental sense of worth, is often shaped in our younger years. The session thoughtfully examined how many of us, due to cultural and societal influences, may not have had that foundational self-esteem fully nurtured, highlighting that a significant part of our personal work involves healing and consciously developing this inner worth.

To turn insight into action, the workshop provided a simple, actionable guide to cultivating confidence, equipping participants with practical steps for their daily lives.

Highly interactive throughout, the session fostered a safe space for sharing and self-discovery. Participants engaged in meaningful dialogue, reflecting on central questions: “Who am I?” “What am I made of?” and “How can I accomplish my dreams and celebrate my true self?”

  • Authenticity is liberating: wearing a mask creates suffocation, while embracing our true selves is an act of freedom.
  • Healing is part of the journey: Core self-esteem, shaped in our youth and influenced by culture, often requires intentional healing and development, unlike skill-based self-efficacy.
  • Assessment leads to growth: Tools like the assertiveness checklist provide a mirror for our behaviours, creating a clear path for development.
  • Values are your compass: Clarity on your core values provides the confidence to make decisions and set boundaries with purpose.
  • Confidence can be built: Through practical guides and understanding the components of self-belief, we can actively cultivate a more confident life.
