Creating Your Profile Recap

On July 19, 2025 AWiBers gathered to attend the Lighthouse session on Creating Your Profile facilitated by Yodit Gidey, COO of Gidey Gebrehiwot Enterprise.

The session began with Yodit asking a simple but powerful question: “Where do you come from?” Not just geographically, but emotionally, historically — in poem form. It was an icebreaker that woke everyone up and helped us center ourselves.

As a photographer, Yodit brought a sharp eye for clarity.
She reminded us that just like with pictures, your profile needs focus.
“Don’t use a cropped group photo. Clean your camera lens first. Let the image be intentional — and so should your words.”

Each of us introduced ourselves. Then Yodit said:
“Write something brief about yourself.”
But brief doesn’t mean empty — it means thoughtful, honest, and well-framed.

She gave us key reminders:

  • Keep it short but tell your story.
  • Weave in your work, your experience, your skills, and what makes you unique.
  • Use online templates (Google them!) for inspiration — but make it your own.
  • Stop changing it every time you’re unsure. Let it breathe.
  • It’s okay to use AI, but edit it after — your voice still matters.

We all wrote our profiles and exchanged feedback —
What to keep, what to cut, what stood out.
It wasn’t just a writing exercise — it was about seeing yourself clearly.

Yodit emphasized:

  • Mention your education, previous jobs, and skills gained.
  • You can’t go wrong with a clean, professional picture — not overly casual.
  • Avoid putting a company logo unless you work there.
  • Your profile should grow with you, not hide you.

Finally, she showed examples — from engineers and teachers to brands like Starbucks and Lemlem.
Each profile had purpose. Clarity. A voice. And so, we walked away not just with words on paper,
But with a better sense of who we are, how to tell our story, and how to make it look like us — in the best light.
