All Things Women Recap

All Things Woman was a full day three part session held on March 8, 2025, touching on three topics: Understanding Culturally Defined Boundaries, Women, Power and Peace and the Concept of Feminism.

Understanding Culturally Defined Boundaries

The morning session delivered by Lidiya Mekonnen, started with a talk about boundaries. Boundaries, though often seen as abstract concepts, are essential for building healthy relationships. Boundaries are often internalized from childhood but can also be shaped by societal expectations.

How to Set and Respect Boundaries:

  • Through action – Constantly reinforcing personal limits.
  • By continuous communication – Clearly articulating needs and expectations.
  • Taking responsibility – Owning and enforcing personal boundaries.
  • Upholding values we teach – Leading by example.
  • Ensuring equal opportunities – Creating fair and inclusive spaces.
  • Being conscious of societal influences – Challenging unhealthy norms.
  • Normalizing saying NO – Empowering individuals to set limits confidently.

Women, Power & Peace

Women, power, and peace are deeply interconnected, as women’s participation in leadership and decision-making plays a crucial role in fostering sustainable peace. Historically, women have been at the forefront of social change, yet they continue to face systemic barriers that limit their influence in political and economic spheres.

Understanding Power

Power can be understood in three key dimensions:

  • Power Within – Recognizing and harnessing one’s own inner strength.
  • Power With – Building power through community support and collaboration.
  • Power To – The ability to take collective action and drive personal and social change.

The Concept of Feminism

Feminism advocates for social, political, and economic equality of the sexes, with a strong emphasis on women’s rights.

Feminism is more than a concept; it’s an ideology for a better society, an identity for leading a better life, a practice of leading, and a movement for advocating equality, challenging oppression, and creating a just and inclusive world.

Core Values of Feminism

  • Gender Equality – Ensuring equal rights, opportunities, and treatment for all genders in social, political, and economic spheres.
  • Intersectionality – Understanding how different aspects of identity (gender, race, class, etc.) interact and shape experiences.
  • Feminist Consciousness & Solidarity – Building awareness and fostering collective support for gender equality.
  • Empowerment – Encouraging individuals, especially women, to claim their power, autonomy, and agency in all aspects of life.
  • Social Justice – Challenging systemic oppression and advocating for policies that promote fairness and equity.
  • Challenging Patriarchy – Addressing structures and norms that reinforce gender-based discrimination and inequality.
  • Advocacy & Activism – Taking action to create meaningful change through education, policy reform, and grassroots movements.

Women, Power and Peace and The Concept of Feminism was delivered by Addis Powerhouse’s Tsion Molla.
