Misrak Makonnen: A Journey of Purpose

It’s not often that a leader counts “moving on” as a definitive sign of success. But for Misrak Makonnen, Ethiopia Country Director of Amref Health Africa, the largest African-led NGO, a field visit to a thriving young women’s cooperative crystallized why she got into the development sector. “When you are not needed is when you know you have done your job well,” says Misrak.
Born in China and raised in Addis Ababa, she came back to Ethiopia at just two years old, stepping into the role of the youngest of three siblings. Now a devoted mother of two, she often reflects fondly on her childhood, which was shaped by the warmth of a traditional family deeply rooted in values. This upbringing provided her with a solid foundation that has guided her throughout her life.
Her educational journey began at Lycée Gebremariam, and she pursued her graduate studies in the United States. Two decades ago, driven by a strong commitment to her homeland, she returned to Ethiopia with a clear vision of making a meaningful impact in the field of public health.
Her career began two decades ago, working on integrating antiretroviral therapy (ART) across African countries such as Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Uganda, during the pivotal rollout of HIV treatment. Misrak’s focus has been on public health, particularly maternal and child health, health system strengthening, and water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Leading a team of over 350 at Amref, Misrak thrives on managing complex programs and partnerships, particularly enjoying the challenges of crafting successful proposals. Her role spans operations, program implementation, and finance, with an increasing focus on making a broader impact. Inspired by the resilience of the communities she serves, Misrak credits her past experiences for shaping her approach to leadership and change.
Now in her eighth year at the helm, Misrak describes her leadership style as collaborative. She is thoughtful about programs being led by passionate team leaders who are not just driven by Amref’s mission but drive the mission. Young talent is coveted and nurtured to take over. “We say we are a people-centered organization and are obligated to live those values,” she says.
What truly motivates Misrak is seeing the tangible impact of their work in the communities they serve. Many of their projects take place in remote areas, where health centers are scarce. The sight of mothers walking long distances to access healthcare drives her passion; each solution they implement brings hope and relief. Though much of her work is done at the office, the incredible dedication of her field staff inspires her daily.
Misrak takes pride in Kefita, Amref’s youth program launched three years ago, which focuses on health, economic empowerment, and civic engagement to foster a prosperous and peaceful Ethiopia. Implemented in 18 cities, Kefita faces challenges due to regional conflicts, but Misrak remains dedicated to investing in youth as agents of meaningful change.
Kefita connects local youth with the diaspora, encouraging experience-sharing and mutual learning to create a brighter future for Ethiopians aged 19 to 29. “Concepts like Kefita animate me,” says Misrak. “Audacious ideas executed with purpose are transforming the development sector, and I am proud Amref is leading this re-imagination.”
For Misrak, her most significant accomplishment is returning to Ethiopia after living in the United States for 17 years. Making that move at the age of 30 was transformative, fulfilling a long-held desire to contribute to her homeland. She believes there are countless opportunities here, particularly in harnessing the skills and networks of the Ethiopian diaspora to make a lasting impact. Returning to Ethiopia also allowed her to connect directly with the people she serves, making her work even more impactful.
In her free time, Misrak enjoys staying active and spending quality time with her family. She plays tennis with her children on weekends, creating joyful moments, and loves hiking and exploring scenic areas outside the city with friends and family. These activities offer her a refreshing break and strengthen her connections with loved ones.
Misrak believes that the younger generation should focus on solid values and a strong foundation. It’s important to share experiences and the right messages in our professions. She values networking and storytelling, like what happens in groups such as AWiB. Programs like the Meri Leadership Program are crucial and should continue. She advises young people to participate in these experiences and to understand that success doesn’t come overnight. Quick fixes are tempting, but learning from real-life experiences is essential. Misrak emphasizes the importance of mentorship; we need to think about who will take our places in the future and guide the youth.
To Misrak, leadership is found in the everyday actions we take. While she may serve as a role model for some, she hesitates to label herself a leader outright, as leadership is often shaped by how others perceive you. Misrak feels that her presence at Amref is not just a career move but a spiritual calling to help bring about change.
Misrak encourages everyone to seek out new experiences and opportunities for growth. She learned invaluable lessons during her three years working in a remote area of West Africa right after graduation, which strengthened her appreciation for what she has.
Her advice to women is to concentrate on their jobs and remember that everyone faces struggles. Life is full of ups and downs, and it’s important to recognize our shared humanity. Misrak believes that every experience offers a chance to learn and grow. Ultimately, we should pursue what makes us happy and contribute positively, as every effort has a return, whether we see it or not.
Misrak’s next big idea is connecting the Ethiopian Diaspora to their homeland. “Young diasporans see Ethiopia as a place of opportunity, with new markets and untapped investments,” she says. “We aim to be the link for them, leveraging our strong reputation as an African-led NGO to lead this effort.” “I see my daughters continuing the tradition of reverse migration to Ethiopia. I hope they will be guided by the resilience of Ethiopian women who have paved the path for them to do so. The values we leave the next generation will make it possible for them to believe in an Ethiopia that previously seemed unattainable.”
Women’s leadership is a key focus for Misrak, who values organizations like AWiB that create spaces for women to network and share ideas. She particularly values the Meri Leadership Program as an essential platform for mentoring young talent.
Misrak believes AWiB has great potential and is
crucial for building community. She hopes more organizations like it will emerge. To engage younger audiences, she recommends hosting events in youth-friendly spaces, creating a youth-focused version of AWiB, and organizing TED Talk-style sessions for young girls.
AWiB wishes Misrak’s path of dedication continues to inspire and create lasting impact.
