AWiB Presents Her Gems

What do our members have to offer to this world. What wisdom can they impart us with. Join us on July 26th as AWiB presents its gems. We invite you to join us in this experience sharing evening.  What is their motivation to do their best? What is their best? Come for Inspiration and Aspiration.

This is a platform made out specifically for you and we encourage you to use it — AWiB– for those daring; for those wishing and for those doing!

AWiB presents the following:

Sosna Demessie is a development consultant. She works on Gender and Development, on poverty and different social issues. During the last ten years Sosna has conducted over twenty studies for Sida, World Bank, UNDP, UNFPA, ECA, CRDA, NEWA, FSS, Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of State Farms, Maritime and Transit Service Corporation, Agricultural Study services.

Sosena’s educational background includes – BSc in Agricultural Economics, MSc specializing in Agricultural and rural Development and different trainings both in Ethiopia and abroad on Gender and Development, Leadership, Conflict resolution and Peace Building.

As a gender specialist, her passion and desire drive her to tirelessly work to bringing women’s issues at the forefront. As Sosna is an action person, she has helped found Association for Gender Equality in Leadership & Decision Making (AGELDM) and has been leading this important platform since 2010.

Sosna served in many worthwhile charity organizations in the leadership capacity. The most outstanding contribution she has made is the revival of Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) after the Derg Regime closed it as a CIA Agent. Sosna and a few courageous women fought for its revival and dedicated themselves to see it flourish to the present.

Selam Akililu DC, MD, a chiropractor and medical director at 1st chiropractic clinic has been in private practice for the last 24 years.13 years in California and the last 11 years here in Ethiopia running 6 clinics (3 in the city of Addis), Jimma and Dire Dawa and a new one coming up in Gondar. Dr. Aklilu is married for 25 years and is a mother of 4 (15-24 years).

She earned her first degree in Chemical Technology and second degree in Doctor of Chiropractic and third in Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Selam also a person who has been looking inwards for the last 25 years more than looking outwards. She hope to be able to share a bit of my journey even it makes a difference in one person. I’m honored for the invitation and thank you and keep up the good work of being a light.

Billene Seyoum Woldeyes has a diverse background with an educational and career path that began in marketing management and progressed to international relations. She currently serves as a Training Programme Officer at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies which trains senior professionals at the African Union and Regional Economic Communities on managing peace and security issues in Africa.

She holds an MA in Gender and Peacebuilding and is also working on finalizing a second MA in International Conflict Transformation. She is passionate about gender issues and committed to deconstructing norms that stifle personal development and progress which she does through maintaining a personal blog covering continental gender issues and through activity with local women’s organizations.

Billene is also a writing enthusiast and finds self expression through poetry. She is highly interested in non-violent communication and the use of arts as a tool for conflict transformation.

Senait Worku is the owner of Antica Restaurant—one of the well run and well recognized restaurants in Addis. Antica Restaurant is a recipient of The International Business Initiative Directions (B.I.D.) in Paris, France where this year’s convention was held. B.I.D awards are presented on the basis of meeting the criteria of the QC100 TQM (Total Quality Management,) the contents of which serve as guidelines to business leaders to improve processes and systems.

Senait studied management at the Addis Ababa University. She has also earned a diploma in the French language from Alliance Ethio-Française. As a concerned citizen to contribute to her nation, Senait belongs to the Amhara Regional Economic Development Association. She affirms “Good citizens love their country not only in words but in deeds. They respect and obey the country law; participate in the public welfare. I am one of them and that is my contribution to my nation”. Senait is married and is a mother of three grown children.
