Health Smart

Health Smart is an interactive weekend event where we explore various aspects of our well-being. In this upcoming session, we’ll shine a spotlight on Nutrition, Mental Health & Physical Movement aiming to provide valuable insights and information on how to take care of ourselves and improve the quality of our lives.

Have you ever felt the world is just a better place, right after a physical exercise? Or found that the problems which seemed paramount seemed irrelevant after a long walk? For many of us, the answer to these questions is yes. Physical activities enhance the release of chemicals in our brains that make us feel good, boost our self-esteem, and help us concentrate, improve our productivity, and sleep well. Making physical activities part of our daily habits is something we shouldn’t take lightly and can boost our well-being in ways we never imagined.

Upon completion of this seminar, you will:

  • Understand the relationship between physical exercise and physical, emotional, and psychological well-being
  • Learn about the importance of simple daily physical exercises in preventing chronic illnesses
  • Get tips and practical tools that can help us incorporate physical exercises into our daily habits

This seminar will be facilitated by Zochi Young – Wellness Architect & interdisciplinary Teacher

Quick reminder – Our brain is an organ and it is as likely to get mild or severe illnesses just as the other organs. Mental illnesses manifest as chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Just as we go to a doctor when we feel pain in other parts of our bodies, we must go to counseling & therapy when we see symptoms of mental illness. Developing coping mechanisms and practices that can enhance our healing is also crucial.

Upon completion of this seminar, you will:

  • Understand the main elements in mental health and identify the difference between coping mechanisms and healing processes
  • Learn about the major causes of mental illness such as traumatic experiences
  • Learn about healing processes and how we can embark on our healing journey or boost our progress
  • Identify lifestyle choices, practices, and habits that can prevent us from being vulnerable to mental illnesses

This seminar will be facilitated by Senait Temesgen, Mental Health Practitioner at Erk Mead Mental Health Services

“We are what we eat!”

What is nutrition and why is it important? Nutrition is the study of nutrients in food, how the body uses them, and the relationship between diet & health.  Good nutrition can be directly described as a regular, balanced diet and it is crucial to maintain our brain, muscle, bone, nerves, skin, blood circulation, and immune system. In this day and age, keeping a balanced diet is easier said than done. It can be challenging especially when most of us have developed a habit of eating the same meals every day. How can we simply balance our diet with convenient nurturing foods that we have around us?

Upon completion of this seminar, you will:

  • Understand the significance that your nutrition has in your overall wellness
  • Learn the importance of being intentional about what, when, and how you eat what you eat in different stages of your life
  • Get tips on how to develop eating habits that are aligned with how we want to improve your lifestyle

This seminar will be facilitated by Abinet Tekle, Ph.D. Fellow and MSc in Food Science and Nutrition, Media Personality, Consultant, Founder & CEO at NEED Nutritional Products and Services PLC
