Call for Justice for Heaven

The egregious and heartbreaking crime of assault, rape and murder taking away seven years old Heaven Awot’s life in the most violent way brings up a striking call to action and a movement to fight violence against women and girls anew. Getnet Baye found guilty and only charged with a 25-year sentence months after the crime has asked for a review of his case and continues to threaten Heaven’s mother as she expressed in her recent media interview.

The assault on Heaven and the disheartening lack of appropriate and timely action in her case brings to mind how countless victims of this crime – young girls and women, continue to suffer in Ethiopia. Safeguarding children and women, girls in particular, should be our primary calling – yet we fall short repeatedly. This brings into question how we view and value women in our culture, and it must change if we are to move forward as a society.

AWiB joins the movement in calling for #justiceforHeaven #endGBV and in condemning both the crime and the lack of appropriate action taken.

    Twenty five years?
Really? A life for a life.
One was precious and had an entire life before her. The other, a vicious predator who not only takes innocent lives but tortures those who Loved her.

If that had happened in the state that I live in, Florida, he would have received the death penalty.

Do the right thing and stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves!
